Prop 8 going to the California Supreme Court
As expected, the Prop 8 issues is going to the California Supreme Court again, though according to the Advocate, nothing will be done quickly – the hearding date is in March. In the meantime, the court has asked both sides of the issue to gather more written arguements.
I know that I should view this as a positive step and an inevitable outcome in light of the recent international protest, but something is making me a little leery… I’m glad that the court decided to hear the challenge, but historically – at least according to the Advocate – the California Supreme Court normally upholds propositions. However, it is my hope that they will see how marriage is a fundamental right to everyone, that LGBT couples should be able to express their commitment to each other, just as their heterosexual counterparts, if they so choose.
